English Language Learners (ELL)

Students at St. Madeleine’s who have recently moved to this country or who live in homes with first-generation immigrant guardians sometimes qualify for additional guidance in order to gain instructional-level command of English.

If it becomes apparent to the teacher that a child may benefit from different instructional methods or possible services, we will seek permission to have that child assessed by local school district personnel.  This assessment is free and conducted here at school during a regular school day.

Our staff uses the information gathered to track the student’s language progress throughout their time here at St. Madeleine’s and to make sure we use appropriate strategies in the classroom to help each child progress.  The identification of children with this need also allows us to access professional development language training for our staff provided through federally funded grants.

Periodically, the classroom teacher will report on an ELL student’s progress as part of his/her cumulative record.  Each time a language assessment is made, you will receive a report of the updated results.
