Recess with Purpose: Trimester 2 Electives Built Skills, Creativity, and Community
Recess at St. Madeleine Sophie School is more than just a break from the rigors of the classroom—it’s an opportunity for students to explore interests, build friendships, and grow important life skills. During Trimester 2, a variety of recess electives gave students across grade levels meaningful ways to learn through play, creativity, and collaboration.
On Tuesdays, students in Grades 3–4 joined Ms. Cordova and Mrs. Wolgamott for Logic Puzzles. During lunch recess, students tackled riddles and brainteasers, working independently or with classmates to find solutions.
“Students thought carefully, looked for patterns, and tried different strategies,” the teachers shared. “They also practiced explaining their thinking and listening to others’ ideas.” Through these activities, students strengthened problem-solving skills while learning the value of teamwork and perseverance.
Younger learners participated on Wednesdays, when Pre-K and Kindergarten students met with Mrs. Balinbin and Mrs. Arildson for Creation Station. Each week, students received a picture for inspiration and chose how they wanted to bring it to life—through drawing, LED boards, whiteboards, playdough, or Wikki Stix.
“This elective encouraged imagination, flexibility, and confidence,” the teachers explained. “Students discovered that there were many different ways to create and express their ideas.” Along the way, students built fine motor skills, creativity, and early problem-solving abilities through open-ended exploration.
On Thursdays, Grades 1–2 took part in Game Time Club with Ms. Nelson and Mrs. Monks. Students played board and card games together, with opportunities to learn new and more challenging options.
“The games allowed students to work together, challenge their strategic thinking, and interact with their peers in a calm way,” the teachers noted. The club promoted cooperation, patience, and friendly competition while helping students practice planning and decision-making.
For students in Grades 3–8, Chess Club—overseen by Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Balinbin on Tuesdays and Thursdays—runs throughout the year. The club offeres regular opportunities to play in person with classmates, building community and sharpening strategic thinking. Students also compete online with peers from other schools in similar age and skill groups.
“The Chess Club provides a supportive and stimulating environment for all levels,” the coordinators shared, “whether students were beginners learning the basics or experienced players looking to improve.”
Together, these Trimester 2 electives reflected our school’s commitment to whole-child learning. By offering purposeful choices during recess, students developed critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and confidence—proving that some of the most meaningful learning happened outside the box.
