Learning Through Play: Lower School Recess Electives Inspire Discovery at St. Madeleine Sophie School

At St. Madeleine Sophie School, learning doesn’t end when class does—it simply takes a new shape. This school year marks the launch of our new Lower School Recess Electives program, an exciting initiative that invites students to explore new interests, build essential skills, and learn from teachers who bring creativity and passion to every lesson. These small-group electives are designed to nurture curiosity and confidence, helping Seraphs discover the joy of learning in every form.

Game Time Club (Grades 3–4) offers students the opportunity to practice strategy and teamwork through play. “Board games and card games give our students a calm and fun way to think critically and work together,” shared Mrs. Wolgamot. “They get to learn new games, strengthen their social skills, and even develop sportsmanship while having fun.” Under the guidance of Mrs. Wolgamot and Mrs. Monks, Game Time Club helps students build patience, logic, and collaboration—all while enjoying the timeless joy of friendly competition.

For our youngest learners, Nature Engineers Club (Grades PK–K) transforms recess into an outdoor classroom. “We love watching students discover new ways to think creatively with what they find in nature,” said Ms. Nelson. “When a stick becomes a tower or a leaf becomes art, they’re not just playing—they’re learning to problem-solve and innovate.” With Ms. Nelson and Mrs. Arildson leading the way, Pre-K and Kindergarten students explore how to use natural materials to build, design, and imagine, while also learning to care for God’s creation.

In STEM Builder’s Club (Grades 1–2), imagination meets engineering. Each week, Mrs. Balinbin and Ms. Cordova challenge students with hands-on building projects using LEGOs, magnatiles, and other creative tools. “It’s incredible to see how quickly they go from an idea to a finished structure,” said Ms. Cordova. “They’re developing teamwork, perseverance, and pride in bringing their ideas to life.” Whether constructing colorful towers or designing new inventions, students are immersed in the excitement of discovery.

Finally, for students ready to test their strategic minds, Chess Club (Grades 3–8) provides a space to grow both focus and friendship. “Chess gives our students a meaningful way to connect, think critically, and build confidence,” said Mrs. Shaw. “We see beginners and advanced players alike challenging themselves—and each other—in a supportive, community-centered environment.” Through weekly play and competition, Chess Club encourages students to think ahead, stay patient, and appreciate the art of strategy.

From nature exploration to game strategy and hands-on building, these electives reflect what makes a St. Madeleine Sophie education so special: inspired teachers, joyful learning, and opportunities that let every child shine.
